In some cases, companies make each new hire sign a Legal Monetary Bond, a document that states how much the employee will have to pay if he or she breaches the contract. Very few companies extend the practice of bonded labor to their expat employees, and itâs best to avoid signing any such document, especially if you arenât sure how long you want to remain in India or with your company.
SICK LEAVE AND VACATION LEAVE
Indian companies grant a lot of leave, but policies on how and when leave can be taken vary greatly from company to company. Most companies grant 4â10 days of sick leave per year to their employees, and it cannot be carried over. This is sometimes mixed with whatâs known as casual leave, days off used for reasons other than illness, akin to personal days in the United States.
Most companies grant two days of paid holiday for every month worked. During an employeeâs probation period, paid leaves are normally accumulated but cannot be used until the probation period is up. Domestic servants, in theory, are entitled to four days off per month, plus 20 days of holiday per year, although this is not enforced and is usually at the discretion of the employer.
Almost all companies close their offices on national holidays and major religious festivals. Depending on the customs of the state you live in, your office may be closed on additional holidays (for example, Maharashtra offices are often closed for Ganesh Chaturthi, but Delhi offices are not). Some offices grant employees one or two âfloating holidaysâ per year. These are essentially religious holidays of lesser significance to the general population but which may be important to an individual employee or his family. Your company will provide a list of such holidays, and you will need to inform HR ahead of time about which holidays you plan to take off.
